Fin Adjustments
Fin AdjustmentsThe adjustable fin on the GOODE skis are designed to "fine-tune" performance characteristics which vary between individual skiing styles, skier weight and boat speed. There are three types of adjustments that can be made to the fin: horizontal, vertical and diagonal. Horizontal AdjustmentA horizontal adjustment forward (toward the tip of the ski) lifts the front and drops the tail during an on-side turn. A horizontal adjustment backward drives the front into the water and raises the tail. Vertical AdjustmentA downward vertical adjustment (out of the ski) improves stability and holding power, while and upward shift makes it easier to turn. Diagonal AdjustmentA diagonal adjustment of a lower longer front makes the fin fuller, and therefore drives the tip of the ski into the water in and off-side turn. A fin with a shorter front raises the tip of the ski. Each type of adjustment will substantially change the performance of the ski. The flatter the leading edge of the fin, the more the fin will keep the front of the ski up. The rounder the leading edge, the more it drives the front into the water. In order to accurately verify results, only one type of adjustment should be made between ski rides. Do not exceed .020"" adjustments for ski ride. Exceeding this tolerance can result in unacceptable results and quick falls. To adjust the fin, a 9/32" allen wrench is needed to loosen/tighten the three set screws along the top side of the fin assembly. Diagonal adjustments can be made by loosening two screws. Retighten all screws after making fin adjustments. When testing adjustments, remove the wing and lower the boat speed two miles per hour. Shortline skiers should lengthen the rope one or two sections. The boat speed should also be lowered. Once adjustments improve ski performance, the wing can be added and the boat speed increased. Once the ultimate fin position has been determined, mark and/or measure the fin position. Therefore, if the fin is accidentally moved, the exact position can be easily readjusted. Overtime, additional adjustments should be considered because changes in water temperature and personal strength can change ski performance. Fin adjustments will help compensate for these changes, thereby improving performance. Adjustment Options

Using Dial CalipersIn order to ski you best, your equipment must be finely tuned. The fin determines what part of the ski gets pressurized and is extremely important to the skis performance. Follow the instructions carefully and record your adjustments and progress on the attached "Fin Log". Note: a .005 " adjustment can make a big difference. To order a dial caliper, click here. INSTRUCTIONS: To adjust fin settings: 1) Record wing angles and remove the wing. 2) Loosen Allen screws on the fin clamps to allow the fin to slide with only a slight pressure. 3) Adjust to desired settings (see above). 4) Tighten Allen screws to hold fin tightly in place. 5) Check measurement after tightening screws as sometimes the fin will move while tightening 6) Replace wing to desired angle using angle gauges.
LENGTH 1). Zero caliper. 2). Hold caliper as shown above. 3). Record length in the Fin Log.
DEPTH 1) Hold the caliper as shown above. 2). Record length in the Fin Log.
DISTANCE FROM TAIL 1). Hold caliper as shown above. 2). Record distance in the Fin Log.
